MONTANER CASTLE
This huge fortified tower was a strategic base in the dream of a great Pyrenean state of Gaston Fébus
The Château de Montaner islabelled Chateaux Majeur d'Aquitaine in 2011. This military 14th century fortress, with its red brick tower of 40 metres high, was classified as a Historical Monument in 1980. This huge fortified tower, in an isolated site, was a strategic base in the dreams of a large Pyrenean state by Gaston Phébus. The breathtaking 360° view from the terrace of the keep on the Pyrenees is worth the climb the multitude of steps of the keep. The association of Friends of the castle provides entertainment including the "Médiévales de Montaner" in July, exhibitions, competitions and a medieval market. Moreover, a new visit tour completely immerses you in the Middle Ages while blending past and virtual reality around the character Gaston Phébus. The scenography of the place has been revised to allow a journey into the traditions, the history and the European courts of the 14th century. The guided tour is a real asset for climbing on the dungeon and for a better understanding the organisation of the place, its history and its military strategic role.
