The Prefecture, headed by the Prefect, provides and coordinates state services in the department. The Somme has four arrondissements: Abbeville, Amiens (the capital), Montdidier and Péronne. In these arrondissements, sub-prefects work to respond to citizens' daily problems. The prefecture also ensures the internal security policies of each territory, organises commemorative ceremonies linked to the history of the districts, ensures that the laws are respected in democratic life, promotes territorial development, provides advice to the elected representatives of each district and acts more globally for the general interest.
