SAINTE-FOY DE MORLAAS CHURCH
The most remarkable feature of this building is its Romanesque portal, with a tympanum carved in the Languedoc style
Classified as a historical monument in 1979, the Sainte-Foy de Morlaàs church was founded in 1080 at the request of Centule V, Viscount of Béarn. In the choir, you can admire Romanesque capitals, including the one of the Sainte-Foy décollation and the famous "Piton de Jaca", a motif found on the road to Santiago de Compostela. In the chapel of Blessed Bernard are four paintings relating the history of this Morlanese man in the 13th century, who died during an ecstatic adoration. The most remarkable element of this building remains its Romanesque portal, with a carved Languedoc-style tympanum. It shows a Christ in majesty surrounded by the evangelists John and Matthew and around the friezes of plant and animal decoration, figures of Atlanteans and finally the representation of the 24 elders of the Apocalypse. The statues on the columns in the portal's frames are those of the apostles. Burned down in 1569 during the religious wars, this portal was restored at the instigation of Viollet-le-Duc, and the restoration was carried out from 1863 to 1903. A place steeped in history to discover in Béarn.
