SAINT MARY'S CATHEDRAL
Cathedral with a treasure trove of rich furniture, a collection of gold and silverware and an imposing chapel
The architecture of this cathedral is breathtaking and makes it the jewel of the episcopal city. Its construction began in 1102 at the request of the Viscount of Bearn Gaston IV the Crusader. Its Romanesque portal alone makes the building famous, the work of two master sculptors of the 12th century. The nave, the choir and the ambulatory are of Gothic period, 14th and 15th centuries. Its treasure consists of rich furniture, a collection of gold and silverware, an imposing chapel with priestly vestments from the 17th and 18th centuries and highlights the generous Saint Gratus, sanctified for his goodness and to whom the local festival pays tribute. A place full of history and unique in Bearn.
