THE CRYPT OF THE CHURCH OF NOTRE-DAME
Crypt containing liturgical artefacts from the commune's seven churches
Under the Romano-Byzantine building, the subtle lighting of the crypt and its freshness are conducive to the silence induced by contemplation. Here, the liturgical art objects of the seven churches of the commune are gathered, it is a small museum dedicated to the 19th and 20th centuries. You will find a rare collection in four rooms that begins with a central Way of the Cross, under a majestic vault. Chasubles, vases and chandeliers lead to a marble altar decorated with the Sacred Heart. In the crypt to the dead are three exceptional paintings, the most surprising being that of Henri Gervex in 1887, The First Communion of the Trinity, but also the Pietà of Joseph Castaing and Saint Joseph of Paul Montaut. Further on, a sacristy with books and paintings, and finally a temporary exhibition room. The neo-Gothic church, built between 1869 and 1893, already housed the crypt where young parishioners gathered for mass, but also their music and catechism lessons. Its renovation is a magnificent success, both atypical and rich in the collections presented. A must for Oloron-Sainte-Marie and the heritage of Béarnais!
