CASTELLATED CASTLE
Old castle, whose vestige is its imposing tower restored in 1845, the terrace is accessible after 141 steps
The Tour Moncade, the only vestige of the medieval château, tells a captivating story. It was once the residence of Gaston III dit Fébus, Viscount of Béarn, and was protected by fortifications and a V-shaped moat. Burnt down during the Wars of Religion, it was restored in 1845. The tower is home to some dark legends, including the murder of Fébus' son and the imprisonment of Blanche de Navarre. A guided tour offers an immersive experience, with a video room and model of the medieval Château d'Orthez and Fébus' hunting booklet! Climb the 141 steps to the keep for a breathtaking panoramic view of the old town and the Pyrenees.
