THE HARDINS
If the Hardines de Ham are somewhat eclipsed by the hortillonnages of Amiens, they are still worth a visit: the thick grass, full of rain and fed by the peaty soil of these market gardens offers a stroll in a very green and relaxing setting, on nearly 32 ha. The gardens have been planted here since at least the 15th century and they are still operated today by a few enthusiasts. They extend to the neighbouring town of Eppeville. The two main springs, called "Fontaine d'Enfer" and "Fontaine Saint-Martin", were once used to supply water to the city's inhabitants but also as laundries. In the past, it was possible to be a "hardiner". There were even 82 of them in 1906 before suffering cruel competition from industrial and greenhouse crops.
