Pau has hosted stages of the Vuelta (Tour of Spain) on several occasions. The 2023 route will pass through the Pyrenees on September 8.

Pau has hosted stages of the Vuelta, the Tour of Spain, on several occasions. On September 8, the 2023 route will pass through the Béarn and Bigourdan Pyrenees (Aubisque, Tourmalet and Hourcère passes, with a stage start in Sauveterre-de-Béarn). The city of Béarn hosted stages of the Vuelta in 2019, 2016, 2012, 2010, 2006 and 1996. The Vuelta is one of cycling's three major tours, alongside the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia. Created in 1935, it is considered one of the world's toughest races.
