ST. JOSEPH'S CHURCH
This Romanesque-Byzantine building is a typical example of 1930s architecture
Saint-Joseph was built around 1915, at the request of the Bishop of Bayonne, at a time when the population of Pau was growing rapidly. The first modest building was rebuilt in 1934 under the impetus of a bold new abbot. Romanesque-Byzantine in style, it resembles the Basilica of Saint Sophia and other Romanesque churches in the region. The church's architectural style is typical of the 1930s. Highlights include an altar carved from a block of marble from the Bénou quarry, mosaics, capitals featuring animals emblematic of the Béarn region (sheep, isards) and statues of the Virgin Mary by Ernest Gabar, a famous Béarn sculptor.
