OUR LADY OF THE END OF THE BRIDGE
A remarkable church, a magnificent example of neo-gothic architecture, with superb stained glass windows and frescoes in Pau.
Built in 1873 by Jean Touzis, it was part of the convent of orphan girls destroyed in 1929. A magnificent example of neo-gothic architecture, it was preserved thanks to the obstinacy of Abbot Hourcade who worked in the inter-war period to set up a parish in the XIV-July district. Fearing a de-Christianization of this part of the city, he bought the walls of the chapel and for three years it was moved stone by stone to be rebuilt on the other side of the Gave. She was thus able to be consecrated to the Immaculate Conception in 1932. The priest asked the glassmakers of the Maison Mauméjean to design the stained glass windows of the nave, choir and transept in an ensemble representing, among other things, the significant events in the life of the Virgin. It is in this part that they are the most interesting, because with their Art Deco style, they are reminiscent of the works of the painter Maurice Denis. Frescoes decorate the four blind bays and this jewel of Gothic art, with its beautiful luminosity, a period statue of the Virgin, given to the abbot, and a mosaic are admirable.
