BERNARDOTTE MUSEUM
Magnificent building built around 1730, retracing the extraordinary career of the man who was marshal of the Empire
Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, a child from Béarn, founded the dynasty of the current Scandinavian royal family by becoming King of Sweden and Norway in 1818! His birth house, a magnificent building built around 1730, retraces the extraordinary career of the former Marshal of the Empire. On 2 floors, you will discover this part of the very rich history through various documents, lithographs and original engravings, paintings and especially objects that cover this ascent from Pau to Stockholm. The rooms have kept their ancient character with 18th century furniture, one of which has been transformed into a Béarnaise kitchen with authentic furniture and household objects. The living room is superb with paintings but above all period Swedish furniture, including typical chairs. King Charles XVI Gustave (seventh descendant of Bernadotte) and his family have already been here 4 times, a play presents them to you starting with Oscar I. Like them, don't hesitate to dive into the fascinating world of a character who is just as fascinating. And for 2020, the museum is accessible to all free of charge!
