A boulevard featuring a 72-arch suspended terrace with panoramic views, bars, restaurants and tearooms

For a taste of Pau's soul, there's nothing like a stroll along the famous Boulevard des Pyrénées. This balcony overlooking the mountain range stretches for two kilometers, from the majestic gates of the Château to the Parc Beaumont. With its 72 arches seemingly floating above the landscape, this suspended terrace offers breathtaking views. Since 1944, this exceptional panorama has been classified under the poetic title of "Horizons palois".

As you stroll along, you'll come across cafés, bars and tearooms, each with its own personality. Don't hesitate to take a break, sit on a terrace and enjoy one of Pau's finest views.

This boulevard, the city's tourist lung, didn't come into being by chance. It owes its existence in part to Napoleon Bonaparte, who, during his visit in 1808, had the intuition to create a panoramic promenade following the line of the mountains. However, it wasn't until 1893 that Mayor Henri Faisans set the project in motion. Six years later, in 1899, the promenade took shape, with a clear objective: to attract foreign visitors, particularly those fleeing the harsh winters to come and enjoy Pau's mild climate.

The success of this initiative is beyond doubt. Even today, walkers flock to enjoy this enchanting setting. And what would this walk be without the funicular? Inaugurated in 1908, this little mechanical gem links the station to the upper town. With its retro charm, it transports passengers back in time to a turn-of-the-century atmosphere.

Below the boulevard, the river Gave meanders across the plain, while the Jurançon hillsides stretch as far as the eye can see. On a clear day, the Pyrenees rise to the horizon like a grandiose backdrop. Between the sky and the earth, you can stroll, stop and contemplate.
