WINDMILL MEMORIAL- WINDMILL MEMORIAL
Former German army mill, with a cast iron plaque, serving as a memorial to the Second Australian Division.
Although the observation post in an old mill built by the German army was pounded by Allied artillery at the beginning of the fighting, the position was not conquered by Australian troops until 4 August 1916, after fierce fighting. The site features a cast iron plaque, which serves as a memorial to the Second Australian Division, and an engraved bench that reads: "The Pozières windmill, the remains of which you can see, was at the heart of the battle that took place in July and August 1916 in this part of the Somme battlefields". Facing him, on the other side of the D929, is the Tank Memorial, in memory of the engagement of the first tanks on a battlefield, in the very area where it is located.
