TANK CORPS MEMORIAL, THE TANK MEMORIAL
A stone obelisk memorial, its four corners adorned with bronze scale models, used during the Great War.
This memorial is located at the northern exit of the village. It is a stone obelisk whose four corners are decorated with a bronze model of the tanks used in the Great War. It was on 15 September 1916, during fighting by the British Fourth Army in the Flers sector east of Pozières, that tanks were first used on a battlefield. Despite relative success (only 9 out of 32 reached their objectives), the tanks were subsequently used on a massive scale, notably at Cambrai in 1917 and at Villers-Bretonneux in 1918.
Opposite the memorial, on the other side of the D929, is the Windmill memorial site, which corresponds to the location of one of the two German observation posts north and south of Pozières. Although badly damaged by artillery in the early days of the fighting, it was not taken by Australian troops until 4 August 1916 after heavy fighting.
