The last great Commonwealth memorial, located near the tower and graves, with a circular orientation table.

The memorial pays tribute to the 11,000 Australian soldiers who died for France and whose names are forever etched in the white stone of this huge monument. Inaugurated in 1938, it is the last major Commonwealth memorial to be built on French soil. It stands on the hill called Hill 104, where the Battle of Villers-Bretonneux was won on 24-25 April 1918. Near the tower and poppy-decorated tombs a circular orientation table points the way to the Australian capital and the various Australian battlefields. Every 25 April this imposing monument fills up with tourists who come to pay their respects to their ancestors. It is ANZAC Day: the commemoration of the first Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) offensive at Gallipoli, Turkey, on 25 April 1915. ANZAC Day is also the occasion for the municipality of Villers-Bretonneux to organise a week of festivities, between concerts and commemorative marches. Since 2018, the visit is enriched by the Sir John Monash Centre, an interpretation centre that uses multimedia technology to tell the story of Australian soldiers on the Western Front in several languages.

A voir absolument !
