POINTE DE SAINTE-BARBE
This rocky promontory overlooks the bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz to the north
This rocky promontory overlooks the bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz to the north. The site has served successively as a stronghold, a place of worship and a pilgrimage site for sailors. Sainte Barbe, patron saint of artillerymen and firefighters, gave the site its name. The development of the public park has enhanced the site's appeal, with its fire alignments, exposure and panoramic views. The coastal footpath along the cliffs leads directly to the park. At the tip of the promontory is the "blue waves" embankment, a green space home to a colony of Serapias, a discreet orchid.
