SAINT-ANDRÉ CHURCH
Church of style mixing Romanesque, Gothic and neoclassical, the oldest of Angoulême
Built in the 12th century, Saint-André is Angoulême's oldest church. Originally the chapel of the Taillefer counts, who had their palace directly opposite, it suffered extensive damage during the Hundred Years' War and the Wars of Religion. It was fully restored in the 17th century. Its style is a mixture of Romanesque, Gothic and neoclassical, making it an atypical building. More recently, in 1999, comic strip artist Yslaire painted a trompe-l'œil wall in the church, which is also well worth a visit.
