THE REMARKS
Today, the ramparts are an undeniable tourist attraction, with their age-old stonework bearing witness to Angoulême's history
The town of Angoulême, situated on a rocky spur, was first walled in the 3rd century. In the Middle Ages, the ramparts were developed, rebuilt and maintained until the end of the 17th century. By the 18th century, the need to defend the city was no longer felt, and the ramparts were modified, the gates removed and the population moved into the immediate vicinity of the town. Today, the millennia-old stones make the ramparts a tourist attraction, offering an exceptional panorama of the surrounding countryside, bordered to the north by the Charente river.
