HAMLET DISTRICT
This district grew up around the salt, brandy, paper, saffron and cannon trades
From the end of the 13th century, this district developed around the salt, brandy, paper, saffron and cannon trades. It was home to a hospital, a naval college, inns and trading posts. A popular and lively district, it fell into decline after the arrival of the railroads in the 19th century, which sounded the death knell of river trade. Now that it has been rehabilitated around the new marina, l'Houmeau has taken on a new lease of life, with Angoulême's media library, l'Alpha, with its unique architecture, and the footbridge linking the district to the station.
