Aubeterre, one mendicant religious order after another.
From viewpoints to alleyways, Aubeterre retains traces of the great mendicant orders. From the chapel of the Cordeliers monastery, established in the 13th century, an arcade and three blind bays adorned with a scallop shell remain. The Wars of Religion replaced them with the Minimes, whose convent chapel houses a spectacular stone altarpiece. In the 17th century, the sisters of Sainte-Claire moved in to provide a retreat for young girls from good families. Today, the convent is privately owned.
