MONOLITHIC CHURCH OF ST. JOHN
The dizzyingly large underground church at Aubeterre is the largest of its kind in Europe
Aubeterre's dizzyingly large underground church (27 m long, 16 m wide and almost 20 m high) is the largest in Europe. It was carved out of a single block of rock by the disciples of Saint-Maur (Benedictines) around the 12th century, enlarging earlier excavations. The centerpiece of this space is the monolithic reliquary. Further on is a baptismal font, probably dug between the 4th and 9th centuries, followed by a necropolis and crypt. A breathtaking monument to visit.

De la crypte à la galerie qui domine le chœur, tout est grandiose et appelle au recueillement.
A voir absolument avant ou après une visite du village, superbe avec une place centrale ombragée qui donne envie de s'installer à une terrasse.
