JACQUES DESLIAS
The terrace and collapsed walls that remain of this castle offer an exceptional panoramic view.
Château de Bouteville, built to resist the Normans, was occupied by the Taillefer family, Counts of Angoulême. During the Hundred Years' War, the castle passed from the French to the English, before finally reverting to the French. King Charles d'Orléans undertook restoration work to bring the château into line with the taste of the time. Then, in 1550, François I, impoverished by his defeat by Charles V, ceded the castle to the English. Destroyed several times, the medieval fortress was replaced at the end of the 15th century by the recently renovated neo-renaissance château.
