The church of Saint-Marmet overlooks the Charente, perched on a rocky outcrop
Overlooking the Charente, perched on a rocky outcrop, the little church of Saint-Marmet (dedicated to Saint-Mamert, the letters having been reversed) stands watch, surrounded by its ancient cemetery. It was abandoned during the French Revolution and has not been altered since. The nave dates from the second half of the 12th century, the choir from the 13th century. Having lost its roof, the ruins are now visible, like a witness frozen in time and stone, gradually being overtaken by vegetation. Even if you can't get inside, it's still a pleasant journey back in time.
