CHURCH OF ST. NICHOLAS

This abbey church founded by Arnaud de Villebois, bishop of Périgueux, in 1025 is one of the oldest in the whole of Angoumois. Inside, the capitals bear witness to this stylistic period characterized by simple plant (foliage and palmettes) and animal motifs. The vault dates from the 11th century, the dome from the 17th century. One of the many legends tells that at the very beginning, the church was to be built on the heights, but every night the work of the night before was destroyed. Certain that this was the will of heaven, the head of the workers threw his cloak into the air and the church was built where the cloak fell.
