SAINT-MICHEL BELL TOWER

Simple and straight bell tower in Chabanais, whose granite habit was preserved and its base restored by arcboutants
This 13th-century bell tower is the last vestige of a former church. In the 13th century, a religious brotherhood of white penitents held services here. Under Napoleon and the Restoration, the building was used as barracks for prisoners of war, after which it was demolished in 1818. Only the bell tower was preserved and restored, simple and upright in its slightly pink granite garb, flared at the base by arches.
