SAINT MARTIAL'S CHURCH
Saint-Martial de Chalais church was built in the 12th century, and its facade has been preserved since that time. It was listed as a Monument Historique in 1902. The façade, with its numerous archivolts, is typical of the Romanesque style so prevalent in the Charente region.
In 1569, the church was looted and burned, and rebuilt in the 16th century. The chapel of the Talleyrand-Périgord family, princes of Chalais, once stood where the organ now stands. Inside, it's the nave's trompe-l'oeil painted wooden ceiling that catches the eye.
