TEMPLAR CHAPEL
This building was erected by those who were in charge of protecting the pilgrims
All that remains of the commandery founded by the Knights Templar is the chapel. No frills in this edifice built by those charged with protecting the pilgrims who flocked to the Charente region on their way to Santiago de Compostela. After the dissolution of the Order, the Châteaubernard commandery was entrusted to the Hospitallers, then to the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. It became national property during the French Revolution, and was returned to worship in 1844. It has been a parish church since 1874. Today, the area around the chapel is a park with tall chestnut trees.
