SCALLOP DOOR
Gate on the banks of the Charente near Château de Cognac, the last surviving medieval gateway to the Cognac city walls
The last survivor of the medieval gates that opened up the city walls, the Porte des Ponts, or Porte Saint-Jacques, stands on the banks of the Charente right next to the Château de Cognac, where the future King of France, François I, was born in 1494. The gate was rebuilt in the 15th century in the form of two solid curtain wall towers, and commanded a bridge that has now disappeared. There's a lot to tell... The bridge gate punctuates two tours of the town of Cognac. For more information on the tours, visit the Tourist Office.
