ÉGLISE DE SANTA GRAZI
Romanesque church with vast roof, barrel vaults and apses, one of the oldest religious monuments in the Basque country
Founded by the Navarrese abbey of Leire with a hospital for pilgrims, the abbey became an important stopover on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. Dating back to the 11th century, this building clinging firmly to the cliff, twice burnt down by the English during the Revolution, is today a jewel of Romanesque art, with three barrel-vaulted naves, pyramidal pillars, apses and magnificent capitals, and in the cemetery, discoidal steles. It is undoubtedly one of the oldest religious monuments in the Basque Country. A vast roof characterizes it.
