SAINT ALEXANDER'S CHURCH

The church of Sauveterre-de-Béarn was built between the end of the th and the early th century. In the Middle Ages, this fortified building dedicated to Saint-André took part in the city's defences. Its Romanesque and Gothic architecture and its imposing bell make it a unique church in Béarn. Built according to the Benedictine plan, in the form of a Latin cross, it measures 35 m long on 20 m wide and the large work is constructed of limestone, stone and sandstone. The exterior is a Romanesque style and its decoration is very austere, with walls only drilled by long and narrow windows. Under the porch, the magnificent sculpted eardrum of the portal, which crown the gate, has nothing to do with those of the larger Romanesque buildings. At the centre of this eardrum is a loving Christ. It is surrounded by allegorical representations of the four main evangelists: Saint Matthew (represented in angel), Saint Mark (lion), Saint Luke (beef) and Saint John (in eagle). The radiant sun and the growing moon are also embedded on the work.
