A Romanesque church in Verteuil-sur-Charente, with a striking stage and green terrace
This Romanesque church dates back to the 12th century. Among its treasures is the mise au tombeau, an impressive 16th-century work in polychrome terracotta by the sculptor Germain Pilon, who created the tombs of several French kings, including François I. It was commissioned by Anne de Polignac, widow of the second-named Duke François La Rochefoucauld. The work was commissioned by Anne de Polignac, widow of the second Duke François de La Rochefoucauld. The eight life-size figures create a strikingly realistic and emotional scene. This basilica-style church is enhanced by its surroundings.
