FORT VAUBAN
A medieval fort with a magnificent view of the Grande Plage, it now houses the Fouras Museum of Regional History.
Don't think this fort was built by the king's famous engineer! A first bastion already occupied the site in the middle of the Middle Ages, but the keep overlooking the Grande Plage - the only vestige of the medieval period - dates from the 15th century. At the end of the 17th century, enclosures, platforms and ramparts were added, based on the defensive system developed by Vauban. If you'd like to find out more, take advantage of the guided tour or the dramatized tour, both of which take place in summer. The view from the terrace is magnificent!
