FORT VAUBAN
A medieval fort with a magnificent view of the Grande Plage, it now houses the Fouras Museum of Regional History.
Don't think this fort was built by the king's famous engineer! A first baston already occupied the site in the middle of the Middle Ages, but the keep we can admire today - the only vestige of the medieval era - dates from the 15th century. At the end of the 17th century, enclosures, platforms and ramparts were added, based on the defensive system developed by Vauban. The guided tour - in summer - includes access to the dungeon terrace, offering an exceptional panoramic view of the Charentais archipelago and the Boyard and Enet forts!
