CHURCH OF ST. MARTIN
Former monastery of the monks of Cluny, transformed into a church after having undergone significant damage during the Hundred Years War
The little church on the Ile d'Aix is in fact a former monastery of the Cluny monks. After suffering extensive damage during the Hundred Years' War (1337-1453) and the Wars of Religion (1567-1570), it was restored in the 1970s. Near the altar are the bones of refractory priests, imprisoned on slave ships anchored off the island during the bloody Terror regime (1793). To reach the 11th-century crypt, take the staircase leading from the choir. It features a transept with an apsidal chapel.
