AQUARIUM LA ROCHELLE
Oceanic aquarium housing approximately 12,000 marine animals and nearly 600 aquatic species from around the world, on 2 floors.
It is a unique and emblematic place. It must be said that its large glass façade attracts the eye and its history is astonishing. René Coutant opened in 1970 an aquarium of 250 m² in the district of la ville en Bois. Eighteen years later, Roselyne and Pascal, his children, opened the Aquarium in the Minimes district. In 2001, still driven by the same passion, they inaugurated this new aquarium in the heart of the city. The oceanic journey lasts more than two hours and allows to admire some 12 000 marine animals and 600 species. The journey leads to all the seas of the world: the Atlantic Ocean of course, the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. If the tropical greenhouse is amazing, it is the Shark Theatre that always fascinates the public. Take advantage of this moment to learn more about this species so often criticized. Become the first tourist site of Charente-Maritime, the influx can be sustained in high summer and on rainy days. The Petit Futé advises you to go there in the morning as soon as it opens or in the evening, from 6pm. Not only will there be fewer people, but you will also benefit from a special atmosphere. In July and August, take advantage of the calm of the night-time hours, the Aquarium is open until 11pm! Note that there is a "Memories of the Oceans" shop where you can take home some souvenirs: books, films, educational games, cuddly toys... Want to stay a little longer? Then head for the second floor in the Aquarium Café where you can have lunch.
