Cathedral installed on the site of the former Protestant temple after the victory of the Catholics over the Reformed in 1628
After the Catholic victory over the Reformed in 1628, it was decided to build a cathedral. However, work did not begin until 1742, a century later! Built on the site of the former Protestant temple, the cathedral was not completed until 1784. Listed as a historic monument in 1906, the Compagnons restored it to its former glory. Many people come to visit this monument located on one of the city's busiest squares.

La Cathédrale Saint-Louis à La Rochelle
La Cathédrale Saint-Louis domine magnifiquement la place de Verdun à La Rochelle. L'intérieur en est magnifique : « le buffet d'orgues de Saint-Louis » assez impressionnant, de très beaux vitraux, de belles sculptures, également la magnifique coupole de la Chapelle de la Vierge, peinte par William Bouguereau au XIXème siècle dans l'actuel « espace prière », de nombreuses et splendides peintures dont les ex-voto. Les ex-voto sont regroupés dans une chapelle fermée par une grille et protégée par une alarme ; c'est plus compliqué pour bien les apprécier. Une autre chapelle comprend des dalles funéraires et un tombeau du XIIème siècle, provenant des fouilles sur le site de l'ancienne chapelle des Templiers de la Rochelle.

The Cathedral Saint Louis de La Rochelle is located in the centre of Verdun near the arcades and not far from the old harbour. It is distinguished by the absence of a steeple. Inside you can find beautiful paintings and the exterior has been renovated, so the stone is beautiful.
