The arcades are as much an attraction as the towers
Like the towers and the Vieux Port, these stone arches are one of the symbols of the maritime city. The people of La Rochelle may not pay them much attention any more, but they're delighted to take shelter in them when it rains, or to enjoy a little shade on a hot summer's day. That's what makes arcades so special: in the Middle Ages, they were used to protect stalls from the elements. Many downtown streets are equipped with them: Saint-Jean-du-Pérot is a popular spot for gourmets, while l'Escale appeals more to the curious.
