THE BIG CLOCK
The Old Port's most symbolic landmark, a clock that kept the inhabitants informed of the time
Along with its three towers, the Grosse Horloge is one of La Rochelle's most remarkable monuments. Once the gateway to the old town, the building was part of the medieval walls, ensuring the safety of the maritime city in the event of an attack. Today, a single opening allows pedestrians to reach the pedestrian streets, while another bay allows carts to pass through. Later, the people of Roche demanded a public clock, which is still in use today. At the beginning of the 20th century, a tramway passed under the Grosse Horloge!
