ROCK TOWERS
An old tower facing the Atlantic, used as both arsenal and prison, with the Tour de la Chaîne opposite.
Facing the Atlantic, these stone fortresses are the emblem of the city, and have watched over the Vieux Port for centuries. Built in the 14th century, the Tour Saint-Nicolas served as both arsenal and prison. After a period of deterioration, it was restored to its former glory, and is now open to visitors once again. Opposite is the Tour de la Chaîne, named after the chain that barred the entrance to the port. The other tower is located near the parapet walk. Carefully restored, it stands out for its bright color and spire.
