THE PORT OF THE SALTWORKS
Ecomuseum located in Le Grand-Village-Plage, with huts to discover biodiversity.
Since 2018, sauniers have taken over old marshes to produce salt. It's true that white gold, as it's known here, is an integral part of Oleron's history. At the eco-museum, visitors can find out more about salt cultivation and the work of the salt worker, and it's even possible to harvest salt during the summer months! Each hut has its own theme: "Sel à vie" ("Salt for life") introduces visitors to biodiversity, "Univer'sel" ("Univer'salt") takes a more economic approach, and "Bons baisers d'Oléron" ("Good wishes from Oleron") evokes salt in postcards.
