CASTLE OF WASIGENSTEIN
Castle including the great-Wasigenstein with pentagonal keep, shield wall and dwelling, the small-Wasigenstein with 4-storey tower
It can be reached from Obersteinbach. The road runs alongside the Gœtzenberg and the Montagne des Païens, where traces of the Neolithic period have been found, including a long enclosure wall. The two Wasigenstein ruins date from the 12th century. A Waltharilied chanson de geste recounts a terrible battle in Attila's time, in the gap between the two castles. The grand-Wasigenstein retains a pentagonal keep, a shield wall and a dwelling. The petit-Wasigenstein features a 4-storey tower with a filtration cistern and a shield wall.
