11. Les carrelets, at the heart of a fisherman's life
Stilts, a footbridge, a small building, a net stretched into the void... But what are these strange constructions, scattered here and there along the Charente coastline? They're called carrelets, the pontoon-cabins used for an ancient fishing method that's simple and accessible to all. The wooden structures, using braided nylon webs, enable shrimp and other fish to be caught close to shore, limiting the risks for inexperienced anglers. This type of fishing requires the use of a square of net held in place by hoops, a rope and a wooden pole. Nothing could be simpler! At the beginning of the 20th century, with the fashion for sea bathing, carrelets gradually became a leisure activity for the well-to-do.
