THE MONOLITHIC HERMITAGE OF THE FIRST CENTURY
Visit the monolithic hermitage, which was a secondary stop on the route to Santiago de Compostela.
The hermitage and monolithic chapel are located some 600 metres south of the lower town. Carved into the sides of the dead cliff, this religious and historical curiosity is attributed to Saint Martial. The caves were built and occupied by monks in the 4th century. As the sea reached the foot of the cliffs, sailors in distress were able to take refuge here, thanks to a "bitter". The hermitage was a staging post on the route to Santiago de Compostela.
