A tower built at the top of a hill, serving as a landmark for easy access to the port of Mortagne.

This tower is located at the top of a hill. Nothing could be better for sailors than to use it as a landmark to help them get to the port of Mortagne. But who created this strange edifice? Le Petit Futé loves a story and has come up with its own version. Deciding to block the Gironde, Gargantua's mother is said to have dumped piles of pebbles into the estuary. The sailors then had no choice but to remove them, forming a tower... In fact, this lantern was rebuilt in the 19th century on the site of a tower...

Un des plus anciens sites monolithiques de France l’Ermitage Saint Martial à Mortagne sur Gironde;
Depuis 1878 le site appartient à l’Evêché;
