LE PONT DE L'ÎLE DE RÉ
The swim is approximately 5,800 metres - the round trip from the mainland: it's up to you! If you're not athletic, or if you want to get there dry, there's only one alternative: cross the bridge. With its 50,000 cubic metres of concrete, over 6,000 tonnes of steel and 1,100 linear metres of foundation piles, it stands out from the crowd. This viaduct is not just a technical feat. Its silhouette testifies to the care taken to integrate the structure into the regional coastal landscape. Everyone can use it: pedestrians and cyclists have a lane reserved for them, and passage is free. Motorists are obliged to pay the ecotax, which came into force on January1, 2012 and is designed to protect the island's environment, as well as the maintenance of the bridge by the Conseil Général. Fares may appear high, but there are various subscription options available, whether for those who work on the island or for owners of second homes. A final alternative is to take the shuttle bus from the belvedere parking lot, which will drop you off on the other side of the bridge. Ideal for a day at the beach!
