Rochefort, a 17th-century new town, has a unique and fascinating destiny. At the instigation of Louis XIV, the Sun King, Rochefort was founded in 1666 as a major war port. Strategically located, the town is naturally protected by the Charente estuary and the islands of Aix and Oléron. Designed and built on a checkerboard plan, Rochefort took on its final appearance thanks to Michel Bégon, Intendant de la Marine, who organized its reconstruction in cut stone. From this rich history, Rochefort draws its singular beauty and royal character, visible in the monumental buildings of the former Arsenal. So, what's there to do and see in Rochefort?
