OFFICE DE TOURISME DES VALS DE SAINTONGE
Tourist office organizing visits in the city of Saint-Jean-d'Angély to discover the history of wine production
A crucial step in the transport of wine production, Saint-Jean-d'Angély develops its own production in the Middle Ages when a Benedictine abbey settles in the city. The products coming out of the abbey are routed through the Boutonne River before being dispatched to their final destination, often further north. The Wars of Religion, however, put an end to this flourishing trade, and it will be necessary to wait until the 19th century for the town to wake up. The city testifies to this long history where pilgrims met on the road to Santiago de Compostela, wine growers, churchmen, and many other characters who made their wealth.
