Tours and royal abbey founded in 817, once attracting crowds of worshippers.
Founded in 817 by Pepin, Carolingian king of Aquitaine, the royal abbey attracted crowds of worshippers who wished to pay homage to the head of Saint John the Baptist, to whom miracles were attributed. Plundered by the Vikings in 861, the abbey was destroyed in 1568. A visit to the towers, open to all, is a must. The Abbaye Royale is a Unesco World Heritage Site on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.
