CLOCK TOWER
A tower symbolizing municipal power in the Middle Ages, then freedom, in the heart of the city, surrounded by half-timbered houses.
A symbol of municipal power in the Middle Ages, this 13th-century tower now stands in the heart of the town. Surrounded by half-timbered houses, it is also close to another building that tourists will admire: the Fontaine du Pilori. In the past, this was one of three gateways used to defend the city. The tower was rebuilt in the early 15th century to symbolize the town's freedoms, and housed the first charter granted by Jean sans Terre in 1199. A ban bell was used to summon burghers and aldermen.
