Visit the UNESCO-listed fortifications built between 1681 and 1685 in Saint-Martin-de-Ré, the island's historic capital
Historical capital of the island of Ré, Saint-Martin-de-Ré is as well known for its flowered alleys as for its harbor enclosed in the fortifications which surprise by their dimensions, 14 km of ramparts. Built between 1681 and 1685, they are based on a vast citadel which was transformed into a prison in the 19th century and which was until 1938 the place of departure of prisoners to the penal colony. The citadel is classified as a Unesco World Heritage Site in the Network of Major Vauban Sites. From the top of the ramparts, you can contemplate the ocean and beyond the bell tower of Ars.
