Source bubbling continuously from its cauldron covered with fluorescent-orange ferric oxide deposits.
Numerous springs gush out in the vicinity of Vichy; they come from deep within the earth's crust, following the cracks created by the solidification of eruptive rocks. The difference in temperature between them is explained by the more or less long journey they make along these cracks before arriving near the ground where they are drilled at a depth of about 100 meters. Coming from Vichy, take the path on the right after the bend, on the road to Hauterive, to find the Lys spring and the Dôme spring, emerging in Abrest. The Lys spring has a temperature of 60.5°C and a flow rate of 12 liters per minute. It bubbles continuously from its cauldron covered with deposits of fluorescent orange ferric oxide and colonies of green micro-algae. The Dôme-Thermal spring, protected by a pavilion, holds the temperature record with 65.5°C, for 16 liters per minute: it is the second hottest spring in Auvergne, after Chaudes-Aygues in the Cantal. It is from these springs that the mud rich in blue algae is prepared, used for the wraps in the thermal establishments of Vichy. Accessible by car, don't miss these springs whose basins are covered with amazingly colored concretions! In total, there are nine springs to be discovered in Vichy: for more information, don't forget to contact the Vichy tourist office.
